Youth for Conservation of Biodiversity

    Biological diversity is the diversity of life on the Earth. Great number of species of plants and animals further development of civilization. Medications, food additives improving our life are extracted from plants. Wild species of plants are crossed with cultural ones for resistance to many diseases. We can say the same about fauna. However, development of civilization at the same time causes the threat of reduction of species structure, disappearance of many species. The world community concerned with this fact takes intensive measures for the conservation of biodiversity on the Earth. In 1966 the Convention on Biodiversity was adopted. The Republic of Uzbekistan jointed it at once. The National Conception and Plan of Action were developed. The educational component is considered to be an important task of biodiversity conservation in Uzbekistan. The programs of students training are worked out at all higher educational institutions of the country; seminars, conferences and trainings are organized. We should like to tell you about one of them.
    The department of ecology, faculty of biology and soil of the National University named after M.Ulugbek jointly with the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan and social and ecological public association ‘HAYOT’ organized scientific and practical meeting and scientific school for young scientists and students on the ‘Actual Problems of Biodiversity Conservation’ on 22 December. The specialists of the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Tashkent city Committee for Nature Protection, scientists of the Institute of Zoology and Scientific and Production Center ‘Botanika’ (Botany) of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, students of biology and soil faculty of the National University named after M.Ulugbek, representatives of public and journalists took part in this event.
   Khojaakbar Toychiev, the vice-rector of the National University named after M.Ulugbek opened the meeting with introductory speech. He acquainted the audience with the work implemented for conservation of biodiversity in Uzbekistan, briefed on the problems and highlighted the way of their resolution. Then he told the participants of the meeting about creation of ‘Ecological Atlas of Uzbekistan’ and presented it.
    Then Gulnara Shagiahmedova, the representative of the State Committee for Nature Protection spoke about practical work and measures taken by the committee for protection of biodiversity.
    Representatives of the Institute of Zoology and Scientific and Production Center ‘Botanika’ of the Academy of Sciences informed the participants of the meeting about researches on the registration of fauna and flora, implemented by scientific institutions of the country.
    During the meeting students asked a lot of questions made proposals and expressed wishes. The meeting evidenced that problems of biodiversity conservation worry young audience, that it is ready to take active part in the environmental protection. The scientific and practical meeting and scientific school for young scientists and students on the ‘Actual Problems of Biodiversity Conservation’ lasted till late evening.
